Darwin's Theory of Evolution
Darwin's Theory
Darwin's Theory of Evolution is based
on the evidence that natural selection is the mechanism of
evolution. Of course, for this theory, the evolution of the species
would be a fact, a postulate. External conditions cause
changes in the organism called mutations, that
is, changes in the genetic material, behavior, and physical form.
The new species either disappears or survives depending on its
ability to deal with the environment.
Such changes are slow and gradual, and
therefore a long period of time — thousands or millions
of years—is needed for a new species to appear.
Its disappearance becomes predictable as another new
species can overcome it in the struggle for survival.
Although the concept of the disappearance of species as a result of the fight for survival with other species has been widely dispersed, the theory of evolution does not place this phenomenon as a part of evolutionary process, either in whole or in part. Other species, families, and genera are part of the environment in which life develops, and they may or may not influence the disappearance of a given species.
It must also be admitted that changes, although slow,
can also be abrupt. They can be caused by violent
changes in the environment, resulting in the swift appearance
of new species. For example, let’s say that two sex cell chromosomes
of the chimpanzee fused together and this gave
rise to the origin of primitive man. Could this abrupt change
have been motivated by, shall we say, a cataclysm?
Darwin is not synonymous with evolution.
The term evolution means different things, like the evolution of the Universe,
the evolution of the Solar System, and the appearance of life on the
Earth, not all of which are part of the theory. However, these
themes are frequently involved in the debate because the
theory was born in confrontation with the Christian and Jewish
faiths. Darwin refuted the doctrine that is in the literal
reading of some Genesis veres, that is, that God created all the species and,
afterwards, man to lead them. From the beginning, Darwin's
theory has been questioned by creationists, mainly the fundamentalists (those who believe literally the creation story as narrated in the beginning
of the Bible's Book of Genesis).
